Promoting the ‘human’ in human rights
4th August 2015
A free seminar by the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services (IRISS) will address the question ‘Are we putting too much emphasis on ‘rights’ when we discuss or legislate on ‘human rights’?
Guest speaker Professor Martha Fineman argues that we are and that that we should look more closely at the ‘human’ aspects of ‘human rights’.
Professor Fineman will explain how her ‘universal vulnerability’ theory could frame arguments to rebut neoliberal emphasis on ‘personal responsibility’ and ‘individual liberty’. The seminar will include three, five-minute responses from:
- The Disabled People’s Independent Living Movement in Scotland
- The Strathclyde Centre for Disability Research at the University of Glasgow
This will be followed by an open discussion.
The seminar will be held in Glasgow on Thursday 10th September 2015 from 1.30pm to 4.00pm.
