Pregnancy and Baby Payment launches in December

22nd November 2018

Social Security Scotland will be accepting applications for the new Best Start Grant – Pregnancy and Baby Payment from Monday 10 December 2018.

The Pregnancy and Baby Payment is a cash payment for the parents, or carers, of a baby. This is paid to help cover some of the costs of having children. These costs could be things like needing a pram, heating your home or buying clothes for your baby but, because it’s a cash payment, you can choose how you need to spend the money.

The Pregnancy and Baby grant will replace and expand on the UK Government’s Sure Start Maternity Grant by:

  • Providing eligible families with £600 on the birth of their first child and £300 on the birth of any subsequent children
  • Not putting a limit on the number of children that are supported
  • Extending the application window from 24 weeks pregnant to 6 months after the birth, giving clients longer to apply

A toolkit is available to download for anyone working in support roles and to help answer any questions about the grant.

Social Security Scotland will be taking applications via their Freephone helpline on 0800 182 2222, by post or online at mygov.scot/pregnancy-and-baby-payment

Best Start Grants (BSG) will provide lower-income families with financial support during the key early years of a child’s life. The processing time for applications will be 5-10 working days, enabling the first grant payments to be made before Christmas 2018. Applicants who may be approaching the 6-month deadline are encouraged to apply early.
