Equine Group: Helping Hands, Harnessing Hope

5th May 2014

Kirriemuir and Forfar Community Mental Health Team have published a report documenting a pilot project which aimed ‘to explore the therapeutic value of undertaking physical activity whilst caring for animals within a group setting.’

The ‘Equine Group: Helping Hands, Harnessing Hope’ project was developed in response to the challenge of finding ways to engage people accessing mental health services in physical activity with an emphasis on ‘Improving the therapeutic environment to enable recovery’.

For the pilot, participants with lived experience of mental ill health were provided with the opportunity to volunteer one day a week, across a twelve week programme, at the Mountains Animal Sanctuary in Glen Ogil. One participant commented:

“Thank you for my experience. I think the group will be of great value to future participants”
