Call out to projects working with young people

3rd July 2018

Do you work with young people? SRN and SPEN are looking for people interested in exploring ways to support positive conversations about mental health and wellbeing with and between young people.

Project focus

The focus of this new project will be based on the principle that we all have mental health and talking about mental health helps us to understand our own and others lives and to develop the skills and confidence to better manage our wellbeing.

People can and do recover from even the most serious mental health problems. Recovery means being able to live a good life, as defined by the person, with or without symptoms. We all experience challenges to our mental health and wellbeing and for some of us those challenges are significant and can seriously affect our lives and future. These challenges can be a result of many factors and as such recovering our mental health and wellbeing needs a lot of different approaches.

Among adults we know that talking with people who understand and share your experiences and being part of mutual support networks (peer support) is highly beneficial. Similarly, peer education approaches emphasise that young people have experience and expertise that they can use to educate and empower others.

Working for and with young people

Central to this collaborative project would be engaging with young people to find out what type of support would help them to have conversations about mental health and in turn:

  • Help them to deal with challenges
  • Support their wellbeing and keep them well

Possible outcomes from this work are the development and testing of a range of different approaches to young people’s mental health and wellbeing and the co-production of resources which support existing work and inspire others.

It could also provide an opportunity to showcase and share examples of work/learning already happening in this area from a variety of organisations and initiatives.

Who would we like to be involved?

  • Peer education organisations and projects interested in developing approaches which support young people to discuss mental health and wellbeing and explore ways that they can support themselves and others.
  • Projects and organisations already having conversations around mental health and wellbeing who would like to share what they are doing and any learning they have generated.
