The Scottish Government have published the findings of an independent evaluation of the Scottish Recovery Indicator (SRI) Pilots in five Health Board Areas. The SRI is a practice development tool which is being developed to assess the degree to which mental health services meet expectations in respect of recovery, rights, inclusion and equalities. The research found that the SRI appeared to have good potential to influence change. It demonstrated how the SRI results can challenge service cultures and point to changes that can be made to promote a stronger recovery orientation. A key strength of the SRI was found to be in its level of detail, which made it possible to pinpoint both areas of good practice and areas for improvement and which provided a structure for identifying what should change and how. However, administering SRI proved to be time consuming and evaluation participants were confused by the scoring of the SRI and felt that there was limited value in the summary scores. The findings of this evaluation are being taken into account as SRN work to redevelop the tool towards achieving the Government’s stated aim that the tool should be in general use by 2010.
