The Scottish Drugs Recovery Consortium (SDRC) will hold its official launch and AGM on 1 June.

The SDRC is a new national body that has been set up to promote recovery to people who are affected by drugs, and to support and coordinate the extensive work that is already going on across Scotland. It will also promote the message - that people can and do recover from drug misuse - to the general public, as a way of tackling stigma and discrimination.

It will operate as an association of individuals and organisations working together, and is currently inviting anyone with an interest to become a member. This includes those in, or seeking recovery, and those who support them – both professionals and unpaid carers. Membership is free.

The establishment of the SDRC was one of the commitments made in The Road to Recovery - the Scottish Government’s national drugs strategy, which identified the need for an organisation similar to the Scottish Recovery Network, but which focused on drugs. The SDRC is funded by the Scottish Government, but is independent and has charity status.

dougie_paterson_pic_smallDougie Paterson, who has spent the last five years heading up ‘Choose Life’, is the newly-appointed Director. He said: “The SDRC will play a critical role in ensuring that recovery becomes embedded into drugs policy, services and practice. This is a unique opportunity to drive and facilitate the recovery approach in ways never before seen in Scotland in relation to drug problems and addiction.”

The SDRC launch and AGM takes place on Tuesday 1st June 2010, from 18:30 to 20:30 at the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow. At the AGM, a Board will be elected from the consortium’s membership.
