Audit Scotland has released an overview of mental health services in Scotland. Key findings of the review include:

  • People find it hard to access certain types of support with evidence of long waiting times for services like psychological therapies.
  • A recognition of the significant shift to community based services over the last ten years.
  • Strong support for recent improvement and policy initiatives.
  • A recognition of the impact of social exclusion on the experience of mental health issues, access to services and suicide levels.
  • Inconsistent provision of out of hours and crisis services across the country.
  • The need for organisations to work more closely to ensure a range of services.
The review also considers the costs of mental health to the NHS in Scotland (estimated to be around £930 million per year in Scotland) and shows the scale of the challenge by suggesting that 850,000 people in Scotland at any one time are experiencing problems.

Audit Scotland ensures that the Scottish Government and public sector bodies in Scotland are held to account for the proper, efficient and effective use of public funds. It is anticipated that this review will lead to further work in relation to specific aspects of mental health.
