Applications now closed for stage 1

LATEST - Based on questions raised since we launched this project we have added a new Frequently Asked Questions document below (stage one faqs).

We are delighted to announce the launch of a project to promote the use of Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP).

WRAP was developed in the United States by Mary Ellen Copeland. It is a simple ‘self management’ tool which is now used in many countries around the world to help people who experience mental health problems better manage their wellbeing and recovery. It is designed to help people take more control of their recovery, to plan how to maintain wellness and reduce, and better manage, periods of illness. WRAP does not necessarily replace other treatments or supports but it can be used to complement them.

With Scottish Government support SRN are making a two stage training programme available. This programme will eventually lead to up to 18 'WRAP Facilitators' gaining the necessary skills and knowledge to support other people to use WRAP to manage their wellness.

Stage one involves running three two day training courses, Introduction to Recovery and WRAP, in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Aberdeen: 6th March and 13th March
Glasgow: 18th March and 25th March
Edinburgh: 31st March and 7th April

These courses are available to anyone with an interest in wellness and recovery by application. There will be up to 15 people participating in each course.

People who successfully complete stage one training will have the opportunity to apply to become WRAP Facilitators by participating in a five day training course in June. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate how they use WRAP in their lives, and to show how they would go on to share their new skills as a Facilitator to support others to develop their own WRAP.

In a specially commissioned article for SRN, researcher and psychiatric survivor Dr Jayasree Kalathil explores the issues of recovery and resilience from the perspective of black women interviewed for a 2011 study by Survivor Research and the Mental Health Foundation. While the article focuses on recent data from England, there are important lessons to be learnt everywhere, including Scotland.

Having recently facilitated Learning Networks on the use of the updated Scottish Recovery Indicator (SRI 2), SRN’s John McCormack was keen to hear from practitioners about their use of the tool and how it affects practice in the field. Here John shares his discussions with Lindsay Kerr and Jan Thomson who both work in NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s Mental Health Services.
