A new report offers useful insights into the development of peer support working internationally.
'Walk the walk and talk the talk', which was commissioned by the International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership (IIMHL), summarises policy context, relevant initiatives, training and supporting evidence in seven IIMHL member countries including Scotland.“My peer support worker is the genuine article who has walked the walk so she can talk the talk. She is an inspiration and gives me hope”(1) Peer Support Workers are people with lived experience of recovery who are trained and employed to support others. They can work in a range of settings and their approach is characterised by key principles of recovery like mutuality, empathy and empowerment. SRN has been working since 2005 to promote peer working, greatly encouraged by participation in IIMHL exchange visits. We are currently working to finalise new learning materials to support nationally accredited learning awards in partnership with SQA. New peer roles continue to be developed across Scotland and SRN are able to offer a range of support and advice in the planning and development of these roles. Contact us for information.
