In December a range of organisations and individuals came together to talk about the formation of an Assets Alliance. The idea of this Alliance is that it could bring together individuals and organisations with an interest in assets and strengths based approaches to the promotion of wellbeing. Dr Harry Burns, Chief Medical Officer at the Scottish Government explains:“The event stemmed from a conviction that in many areas we need to re-think models of public service delivery, which have tended to be based on doing things to people to ‘fix’ their deficiencies, often engendering a culture of dependency. By contrast assets approaches recognise individuals’ and communities’ strengths and assets and support them to use these to manage their own circumstances and so achieve sustainable improvements in their lives.” This approach has a strong resonance with work to promote and support recovery with its strong emphasis on self management, strengths and expertise by experience and SRN will continue to contribute to discussions in relation to this Alliance.
